Hmmm, in my experience, it's almost always exaltation rather than depression.
I once was caught (innocently) looking at a woman and she challenged me with "In your dreams," to which I replied, "Ha! more like a nightmare," and she hauled off and smacked me before I had time to duck.
While this is humor, the underlying idea is serious. I am the man in love and remain so this day.
